About MT Interactive
- What is MT Interactive? MT Interactive is the CD that accompanies the Medical Transcription Fundamentals and Practice (MTFP) textbook, published by Prentice Hall. The MT Interactive CD contains the practice dictation assigned in the MTFP textbook and includes its own word processing program and audio player (wav player). A computer foot pedal is required for use with the wav player.
- Where do I get MT Interactive? Visit the Prentice Hall's Web site to learn more about their products. Click here.
- Do I need a foot pedal? MT Interactive requires the use of a IN-USB-1 model Infinity Series foot pedal. For information about obtaining a foot pedal or troubleshooting a nonworking pedal, click here.

Foot pedal troubleshooting
- How do I solve a problem with my foot pedal? Detailed troubleshooting information is available on the Foot Pedal page. Follow the link in the menu on the left or click here.
- Where can I get a compatible foot pedal? Click here to purchase a compatible foot pedal from Health Professions Institute. If you choose another vendor, make sure you get the IN-USB-1 model number as other models will not work with our software.
- Can I use a game-port foot pedal? There are two models of game-port pedals that will work with this software, IN-BMG and IN-FCHC. Both require that you have a 15-pin game port (aka MIDI port) on your PC. Both require some settings changes within MT Interactive to accommodate them. See the Foot Pedal Setup section in MT Interactive's Help file and read also the foot pedal troubleshooting information by clicking here or choosing the Foot Pedal link on the menu at the left.
Sound problems
- Why can't I hear the dictation? It's most likely that the problem is related to the setup of your foot pedal. Click here for foot pedal troubleshooting, but first make sure you have system sound by using your mouse to click Play in the onscreen controls. If you can't hear the dictation with the mouse controls, the problem is not your foot pedal. There is a detailed troubleshooting guide in the Frequently Asked Questions section in MT Interactive's Help files. Just click Help from the main screen in MT Interactive and then click Frequently Asked Questions. If you can't resolve the problem with this information, submit a Help Request by clicking the link on the menu at the left.
- What kind of headset do I need? You can use any single prong stereo or Walkman-type headset that will attach to your computer's speakers or to the headset jack on the sound card on the back or front of your PC. If you connect directly to your speakers, you can usually use an inexpensive headset (less than $10). If you connect directly to your sound card and the volume is too low, you may need a somewhat more expensive powered headset or an inexpensive set of speakers that offer a headset jack. There is such a thing as a "transcription headset," and some MTs prefer them but an ordinary stereo headset works just as well. I personally prefer a wireless stereo headset that offers me freedom of movement and blocks out extraneous room noise through its large padded ear muffs.

Versions and upgrades
- What is my version number? Click the About button on the main program screen to see the version number.
- Do I need an upgrade and where do I get it? If your version is below 3.0, you should download and install the newest version, which is 3.1. It is available on our Home page and on our Downloads page. Use the links at the left or click here. For help with downloading and installing an upgrade, see the next topic.

Downloading and installing upgrades
- How do I download a file? From the Downloads page, use the right mouse button to click on one of the download links. From your right click menu, choose Save Target As or Save Link As. This will bring up the Save As dialog box. Click the link on the left side for your Desktop as the saving location. Then click Save. After the download process is complete, you will find the installation program icon on your desktop.
- Where did my downloaded file go? If you choose your desktop as the download location, as described above, the installation file will be visible on your desktop when you close your browser window. AOL (and some other ISPs) may not offer you this choice and will have a specified directory where all downloaded files are saved. If you cannot locate your downloads directory, check your AOL Help files or contact your ISP for assistance.
- How do I install the program? After downloading the installation file as above, double click the icon on your desktop to launch it. Agree to all the prompts during the installation program by clicking Next, Yes, Okay, etc. This will ensure the program installs in the appropriate location on your hard drive.

Transcript key access
- What are transcript keys? Transcript keys are the "answer keys" for the audio files you transcribe, which you or your instructor will use when correcting your work.
- Why is the transcript key icon grayed on my screen? The transcript keys for MT Interactive are encrypted and passworded for the convenience of your instructor. Contact your school to find out if you are to use the transcript keys to correct your own work or submit your transcribed reports to your instructor for grading and feedback. If you are to correct your own work, your school will provide the necessary password to you. If you are an independent student who purchased MT Interactive directly from the publisher, contact the publisher for assistance. If you've purchased this material from someone other than the publisher, contact your place of purchase for assistance.

Password problems
- Why isn't my transcript key password working? The transcript key access password functions as a toggle--enter the password and the keys are now available, enter it again and they are unavailable. If you enter the password incorrectly, you will get an error message. If you get no feedback, you successfully toggled the transcript keys on or off.
- Why can't I get the password box to come up so I can enter my password?
If you are having difficulty with the keystroke command that brings up the password dialog box, first make sure that you are on the right screen when you enter it. You need to be at the main menu. This is the screen that comes up first when you launch the program and displays the list of chapters. Next, if you have a multimedia keyboard with an F-Lock key, turn it off. The F-Lock key assigns a different set of functions to your F keys. Next, make sure you are hitting all the designated keys at one time. It’s definitely a two-handed maneuver. If you are still having difficulty, try an alternate keyboard or ask your school to demonstrate the procedure.
- Why do I keep getting an error message when I enter my password? Here are some general tips for using passwords: First, make sure you have the right password by contacting your school.
Verify passwords over the phone, if possible, as typos do work their way into printed matter over time.
Remember that passwords are case sensitive. Make sure your caps lock is not on so that upper and lower case letters are entered correctly. If you are cutting and pasting a password, make sure you aren't picking up a space or an invisible character along with the password, as that would alter what the program reads as the entry you made.
Also, make sure that look-alike characters are not confused, e.g., the lower case L looks exactly like the numeral 1 in many fonts. (Verifying passwords over the phone with your school can route out this kind of problem.)
If you are still having difficulty with your password after checking with your school, ask your school to contact the publisher to be sure that they have the right information.

Other wav player programs
- Can I use MT Interactive to transcribe other dictation files, e.g., a preemployment test? The audio player (or “wav player”) provided within MT Interactive software will also play ordinary audio files saved in the universal WAV file format, in addition to the audio files provided within the program. If you require a wav player that will handle other audio file formats, e.g., MP3 files, we recommend the free Express Scribe player from NCH Swift Sound. Click here for information on Express Scribe.

A word about Macs
- Can I use MT Interactive on my Mac? MT Interactive software is written for the Windows environment. It is possible to run PC emulation software, like Virtual PC, and install Windows on your Mac, but there is no guarantee and that this will work, and we cannot provide technical support for Mac users. Although we like Macs and own several, the medical transcription industry is entirely PC based. You will eventually need a PC to get started in the field, so now is the time to learn to use one. A brand-new economy model can be had for about $500--not much more than the cost of the software you'd need to try to run MT Interactive on your Mac. Used PCs are often given away, so it is worth pursuing, even on a tight budget.
- What if I want to try it anyway? If you insist on trying MT Interactive on your Mac, we won't stop you but do note that the OSX version of Virtual PC will NOT support the USB foot pedal. You will have to boot to Classic Mode (OS9) and use the OS9 version of Virtual PC. At one point, Virtual PC came with both OS9 and OSX support, but we cannot confirm that that is still the case. In OS9 running a compatible version of Virtual PC and either Windows 98 or Windows XP, we have been able to use the IN-USB-1 foot pedal with MT Interactive. In some cases, it was necessary to run Windows update or manually delete and reinstall the USB root hub as described on the foot pedal troubleshooting page. Please note, however, that we do NOT recommend using MT Interactive on a Mac nor can we provide tech support.
